As part of my commitment to professional growth, I recently completed an 8-hour training course on SIVA (Supporting Individuals through Valued Attachments). This experience exemplifies Standard 7 of the Professional Standards for BC Educators, which emphasizes engaging in professional learning and reflective practice to meet individual professional needs and refine educational philosophies.

The SIVA model focuses on holistic, relationship-based approaches to supporting individuals with complex needs. Grounded in neuroscience and attachment theory, it encourages educators to move beyond reactive, crisis-focused strategies toward fostering proactive and sustainable relationships. The training provided actionable tools for collaboration, self-management, and goal-oriented problem-solving, which resonate deeply with my philosophy of education.

SIVA training challenged me to reflect on how I approach classroom management and relationship-building with students. I gained insights into the role of emotional regulation, resilience, and empowerment in creating safe, inclusive spaces for learning. For example, understanding how trauma and attachment influence behavior encouraged me to reframe my responses to challenging situations. Rather than focusing on immediate behavioral outcomes, I now recognize the importance of addressing underlying needs to foster long-term growth.

As a teacher candidate passionate about inclusivity and neurodivergence, SIVA aligned with my goal to develop strategies that support all learners equitably. The training equipped me with practical techniques to anticipate and de-escalate challenges, empowering students to self-regulate and succeed in the classroom. These tools are particularly valuable for ensuring students feel seen, respected, and valuedâprinciples that underpin my teaching practice.

The SIVA model has refined my understanding of the power of healthy relationships in education. Building trust with students, families, and colleagues is integral to my philosophy. By grounding my practice in research, reflective learning, and the principles of SIVA, I aim to create a classroom culture where safety and belonging are prioritized, enabling every student to thrive.
This training reinforced that professional growth is a continuous process. Itâs about seeking learning opportunities that challenge assumptions, enhance practice, and align with the standards of our profession. My journey with SIVA is just one step in this lifelong commitment to learning and improving as an educator.
